Giant isopod is the name given to the isopod crustaceans of the genus Bathynomus. They are close relatives of the woodlice, and also look and behave like them. The biggest difference between the two is that giant isopods can be around as big as a housecat. They live in the cold, deep waters of the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans. They're bottom feeders, and are important scavengers in the deep-sea benthic environmet. The French zoologist Alphonse Milne-Edwards was the first to describe the genus in 1879, after his colleague Alexander Agassiz collected a juvenile male Bathynomus giganteus from the Gulf of Mexico. This was an extremely groundbreaking discovery, as at the time, the idea of a lifeless or "azoic" deep ocean had only recently been refuted by the work of Sir Charles Wyville Thomson and others. No females were recovered until 1891.
